Sophia Mercer, AMFT
Sophia graduated from CUNY Hunter College in 2012 with a BA in Film Studies. After an initial career in film/TV production in Los Angeles, she found a creative outlet through movement as a Pilates trainer. Working with her trainees on their physical wellness, mindfulness and breathwork, she discovered her true passion for caring for others and creating a warm, empathetic space for people to explire their internal world as well.
Sophia then completed her MA in Marriage and Family Therapy at Antioch University in 2022. She has experience providing individuals, couples, and family therapy in a variety of settings treating a wide range of clinical issues. She takes a collaborative, integrative approach to best fit each unique individual in the room. She holds an Associate License in MFT in New Jersey (#37FA00027500) and in New York (P115588).
Sophia offers a safe space to help her clients explore opportunities for change, growth and self-discovery. Through a mutual engagement in the therapy process, clients are supported in gaining insight about their relationships, their sense of who they are, and who they want to become. Sophia challenges her client’s negative or limiting perceptions, highlights their strengths and agency, and encourages them to feel compassion for themselves above all. She values the mutual trust, courage and vulnerability required in order to work together to achieve change through therapy.
Outside of work, Sophia enjoys motherhood, spending time with family and friends and her dog, travel, good TV shows, good food, meeting new people and trying new things. She still practices pilates and yoga regularly and believes physical exercise and a self-care routine is an integral part of achieving balance in one’s life and relationships.
